Founders
| In September 1998, Drs Christophe
Echeverri and Pierre Gönczy
started
co-directing a group of technicians, students and postdocs within the
laboratory of Prof Anthony Hyman at the European Molecular Biology
Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany) to test the feasibility of applying
RNAi as a genome-scale screening method. Within a year, their
pioneering success encouraged others to follow the same path, and
convinced the three scientists of the immense potential value of
further exploring this revolutionary concept. With Drs Gönczy and
Hyman already committed to staying in their respective academic
research positions, Dr. Echeverri led the foundation and build-up of
Cenix BioScience GmbH, fulfilling CEO and CSO duties to this day. |

Dr. Christophe J.
Echeverri (Lead Founder, CEO/CSO):
Dr. Echeverri’s training as a molecular cell biologist began with a
B.Sc. (Hon.’s, 1990) and an M.Sc. (1992) in Biology, both completed at
the University of Ottawa, Canada, studying cytoskeletal processes
underlying mammalian neuronal differentiation and cell division. He
then completed a Ph.D. in Cell Biology (1998) at the University of
Massachusetts (Worcester, MA), focusing on the role of
microtubule-based motors in a wide range of cellular processes
including cell division. In 1998, he joined the laboratory of Prof.
Anthony Hyman at the EMBL (Heidelberg, Germany) as a postdoctoral
research scientist, where he co-directed the genomic RNAi screening
project with Dr. Pierre Gönczy. In October 1999, Dr.
Echeverri co-founded Cenix with Drs. Gönczy and Hyman. Dr.
Echeverri was recognized in 2003 as one the world's Top 100 Young
Innovators by MIT's Technology
Review
magazine.
Prof. Dr. Pierre
Gönczy (Co-founder): After studying biology at the
University of Geneva, Pierre Gönczy obtained his Ph.D. in 1995
studying spermatogenesis in the Drosophila system at The Rockefeller
University (New York, USA). During his post-doctoral work in the
laboratory of Prof. Anthony Hyman at the EMBL (Heidelberg, Germany), he
co-directed the genomic RNAi screening project with Dr.
Echeverri, before leaving to establish his
own research laboratory at the ISREC (Lausanne) as a senior
scientist, where he remains today. In 2005 he became Associate
Professor in the School of Life Sciences at EPFL. While
not participating directly in
Cenix operations, Prof. Gönczy has remained a strong scientific
collaborator for the company.
Prof. Dr. Anthony A. Hyman (Co-founder):
With over 70 publications in leading journals including Nature, Science
and Cell, Prof. Hyman is a recognised world leader in the study of
animal cell division, and particularly on the role of microtubule-based
processes therein. He began this work during his Ph.D. in
Biology/Zoology at Cambridge University, Kings College (1988), where he
completed landmark research on the early stages of embryogenesis in C.
elegans. He then turned to mammalian cells and in vitro systems during
his post-doctoral work with Dr. Tim Mitchison at the Univ. of
California-San Francisco (1988-1993), before expanding to the combined
use of multiple experimental systems including yeast, C. elegans,
Xenopus, and in vitro assays as a Group Leader at the EMBL (Heidelberg,
1993-1998). Since 1998, he continues this world leading research as a
Group
Leader and Director at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell
Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG, Dresden). Prof. Hyman was
awarded the EMBO Gold Medal in
2003. While not participating directly
in Cenix operations, Prof. Hyman has remained a strong scientific
collaborator for the company.
